The best help for performing your own service work on your Mercury outboard engine is probably to be found in the Mercury Service Manual.
Mercury service manuals are typically nicely illustrated and give detailed procedures for performing service such as replacement of the water pump impeller. In general the gear case on a Mercury can typically be dropped quite easily because Mercury uses a splined shaft to connect the gear shift rod from the gear case to the mechanism in the mid-section for remote control.
This means that you can typically just loosen all the fasteners and the gear case will be free to drop. At the size and weight of the gear case on your HP, the challenge will come when you want to reinstall the gear case.
You have to wiggle it upwards, and you have to make sure all the various passages and shafts align. It can be a handful for one person. This way you can use the propeller to rotate the propeller shaft during the impeller replacement procedure and also when re-installing the gear case. You should check your owner's manual for your Mercury outboard engine to find the recommended service interval for the water pump. A water pump repair kit is available for almost all outboard models.
Disconnect the shift rod Not all shift rods disconnect in the same way. Some disconnect up by the powerhead, some disconnect below the swivel bracket, and some disconnect above the gearcase.
