This really separates the Japanese movement manufacturers from Chinese competitors. There really are too many brands to list that use Miyota movements in their watches.
Below is a non-exhaustive list of every brand which uses or has used Miyota for their watches. Perhaps the most well known basic mechanical movement that also has a reputation for being the ultimate workhorse. The Miyota is preferred by almost every brand that wants to make an automatic watch with both a cheap and reliable movement.
The downside of the Miyota is that it is nowhere near as accurate when compared to move expensive movements. The Miyota is something of a mid-level automatic movement made by the brand. It has a 42 hour power reserve and an impressive 28, beats per hour which is comparable to brands such as ETA and Sellita.
You will however find the Miyota in respectable micro brands that want to make a higher quality watch. If you think this movement is quite unremarkable, you are right, yet also very wrong. However, this is the lowest price, super accurate and best value for money quartz movement that the Miyota brand produces. The ETA utilizes a bi-directional rotor to wind up the movement. Due to its Swiss-made pedigree, the ETA movement is more expensive than comparable movements made in other countries.
Made in Japan by Citizen, the Miyota automatic movement offers similar functionality as the ETA but at a lower price point. The Miyota measures 26 mm in diameter but it is slightly slimmer than the ETA at 3.
It includes the center hour, minute, and sweeping seconds hand also hacking , in addition to a date window. However, the date window is not a quick change one but instead, it gradually turns to the following day. Frequency rate is the same at 28, bph, yet it has a higher power reserve of about 42 hours. Unlike the ETA, the Miyota utilizes a unidirectional rotor to wind up the movement, which some wearers have noted is markedly noisier.
ETA or Miyota Equipped with a ball bearing rotor, a second stop and a date with a quick-change circuit, this new plant works very precisely with 28, half oscillations per hour.
According to experience, however, the work runs much more precisely, in some cases with a deviation in the single-digit second range. Furthermore, the movement has a shock absorber , a Swiss anchoring inhibitor and a manual hoist. The reserve is 42 hours. The movement is a technical masterpiece due to its low overall height of only 3. Click here to order a replacement Miyota movement for your watch.
The picture below is from a Zelos Helmsman watch. This pic is from a Lum-Tec B24 Carbon. The Tudor Black Bay is one of the nicest and simplest high-end sports watches on the market. Both the Miyota and the ETA are great movements found in a range of different watches from some well-known brands.
When comparing them, it essentially comes down to a trade-off between high-volume Japanese engineering and high-quality Swiss crafting. Both movements will offer reliable performance, but if high-quality and being Swiss-made are on your priority list, go for the ETA If on the other hand, you simply need a reliable movement at a cost-effective price, the Miyota will see you well and help you keep great time all year round!
