Playstation 1 game list by year

Not only was it the next-generation game console, but you could also watch movies in crisp p on your CRTV with 3 to 5 channel Dolby sound. You had to buy a PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor and use dial-up or broadband internet to connect to your game which ran on on third-party servers.

Eventually, Sony released the PS2 Slim in , which included networking ports on the console. It was also during this era that the rise of rhythm games began to explode, with the likes of Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Dance Dance Revolution, and SingStar becoming popular on the platform. Not only were people buying the games, but they would spend hundreds of dollars on accessories like microphones, dance pads, guitars, and electronic drum kits.

The system was highly criticized early on for its high price tag, Sixaxis controller and poorly developed multi-platform games. The unique Cell architecture was a large hurdle for developers in the beginning, but over time they were able to unlock the full potential of the console.

Despite its hardships early on, the PS3 would eventually become one of the highest selling consoles of the seventh generation, selling The PlayStation Network was launched in , for players to connect with friends and jump into multiplayer games online for free.

The trophy system was introduced in July of , adding a key missing feature that their competitors over at Xbox had with Achievements in years prior. Originally, Sony made trophies an optional feature for game developers, however by January , they made them mandatory. Super Stardust HD was the first title to feature trophies thanks to an update.

PlayStation Home was fun while it lasted, allowing players to meet in virtual spaces using their own custom avatar. It was launched as an open beta in December of , and eventually closed down in March of Each user was given a personal studio that users could furnish with free, paid, or won items. Each district were frequently updated by Sony and its partners with content, streaming events, mini-games, and more. There was also a game launching feature that allowed players to meet up with friends in Home and launch into a game together.

Compared to the PS3, the PlayStation 4 launch lineup was somewhat underwhelming. It mainly consisted of last-gen ports, with its most well-received game being the small-scale arcade shoot 'em up Resogun. As far as full retail releases go, the only games the PS4 had to offer in were Killzone: Shadow Fall , which earned mediocre reviews when compared to the first two games in the series, and the retro-style platformer Knack.

Similarly to Killzone , Knack earned mediocre reviews at the time of its launch, but it did develop enough of a following for Sony to justify moving forward with a sequel. It was essentially just a mini-game collection that showed off the PS4's unique capabilities when paired with a PlayStation Camera, but it's notable for being the precursor for the critically-acclaimed Astro Bot Rescue Mission and the upcoming Astro's Playroom on the PS5.

The Last of Us Remastered brought one of the PS3's most critically-acclaimed games to PS4 with enhanced visuals, and Sony also launched a few digital-only PS4 exclusives in as well. Overall, the PS4 exclusives lineup in , while it consisted of more games, still failed to really deliver anything on the level of what would come to the system down the line. In , the PS4 really started to come into its own with some truly excellent games. Bloodborne from FromSoftware was the big release of the year, earning near-universal praise from critics and fans of Souls -like games.

Sony also launched the critically-acclaimed horror game Until Dawn in , which helped establish Supermassive Games as a premiere studio for narrative-driven horror games. The Order: didn't exactly live up to the hype and failed to launch a new franchise like Sony was hoping, but it did do a good job of showing just how impressive graphics could be on the PlayStation 4.

Billed as the final game in Nathan Drake's story, Uncharted 4 was universally praised at the time of its release, and remains one of the highest-rated games available on the system. But while was a great year in terms of traditional PS4 exclusives, it was also notable as being the year that Sony launched its PlayStation VR headset. Four years after the launch of Knack as a PS4 launch title, Sony released Knack 2 in , which added a co-op mode and was better received than its predecessor.

There were a number of other notable releases in as well, including plenty more remasters, bundles, and PlayStation VR games, but the big release of the year was undoubtedly Horizon Zero Dawn. Horizon Zero Dawn 's open world gameplay was well-received by PlayStation fans, and definitely redeemed developer Guerrilla Games in the eyes of many after the letdown that was Killzone: Shadow Fall in The studio's next project will be an original game, rather than another remake.

Though not a full-blown sequel, this standalone expansion sends Peter Parker on vacation and leaves his young spider-apprentice Miles Morales to look after New York.

Building on the rock-solid foundations of Insomniac's first game, New York has been gorgeously blanketed with snow, holiday cheer, and next-gen polish. The improvements aren't just cosmetic, however — the eponymous hero has a few more spider-powers at his disposal than Peter Parker, and these are cleverly adapted into new gameplay mechanics that, while they don't reinvent the wheel, they put enough of a spin on it to make it feel fresh - sometimes literally, thanks to the DualSense controller.

It doesn't feature as robust of a campaign or as many colorful villains as 's Spider-Man, but Miles Morales' story has just as much charm and heart as its predecessor, possibly more. Its tagline of "Be Greater" set a high bar, but Miles Morales somersaults over it with ease.
